How retailers can become a Shopee seller: A step-by-step guide to start selling on Shopee

The eCommerce landscape in Southeast Asia is growing faster than ever with the emergence of online marketplaces. While Lazada has been dominating this region, recent years have seen some new platforms quickly taking over this space. One of these competitors who’s going toe-to-toe with Lazada is Shopee.

Despite being new, Shopee is vying with Lazada for the top spot. It operates in Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. In several countries, Shopee has already outdid Lazada in active users and mobile app downloads. And now, it’s expanding its operations to South America, Europe, and India

Why should you sell on Shopee?

Shopee is similar to the Taobao model, in which buyers and sellers can communicate and transact directly. It's a mobile-only and socially eccentric marketplace that charges no commission or listing fee. It also allows cross-border selling so you can sell your products everywhere from anywhere. Other benefits include:

  • A vast and diverse user base
  • High daily and monthly traffic
  • Free shipping and logistics
  • Free live streaming platform

These are just a few. Once your sales start to grow, you’ll unlock more exclusive features and benefits to boost your business. So if you want to know how retailers like you can start selling on Shopee, we've got you covered!

How to sell on Shopee?

To start selling on Shopee, you have to submit an application form on Shopee.cn. Once you have the approval, you can create an account onshopee.com.my or download their app.

Step 1: Open the app and tap on the + button on Android or the Sell button on iOS.

Step 2: Tap the Camera button to put a new photo of your product. You can also choose up to 9 existing pictures from your album/gallery

Step 3: Fill in product details such as Category, Price, Stock, Variation, Weight, Shipping Options/ Fees, and Days to Ship. Ensure you add hashtags to your Shopee product to appear in more searches.

Step 4: Check the listings once again to confirm the details are correct and hit the publish button to make it go live. You have successfully updated your product listing and are now ready to sell on Shopee.

Listing products and creating your shop are your first steps as a Shopee seller. Then you must grab as many eyeballs as possible on this global platform to best other sellers.. And the best way to achieve that is to become a Shopee Preferred seller.

How to become a Shopee Preferred Seller?

Being a preferred seller has many perks, but you can become one through invitation only. The Shopee team regularly scans and selects a few sellers to feature as preferred sellers on their platform. So you must meet several benchmarks to be selected, including high seller ratings, quality listings with competitive prices, and more than 95% ready stock.

However, having a high ready stock without tracking inventory turnovers can lead to dead stock and profit loss. So don't forget to set up a digital, cloud POS system with advanced inventory features to track inventory levels and movements, allocate and replenish stock as per the demand, and avoid profit loss.
